Beauty and the Boats -August 2015

THE OPERA HOUSE CUP was born on a humid August evening in 1973 at Gwen Gaillard’s Opera House restaurant, when some of the island’s finest sailors lamented there was no race for wooden sailboats. Gaillard offered to throw the post-race party and donate the trophy – a sterling-silver wine bucket – if the wooden-boat afficionados decided to put something together.
They did, and over the next four-plus decades, the race has grown into one of the premier wooden-boat regattas on the East Coast, attracting 75 or more sailboats annually to the culminating event of Nantucket Race Week. The 43rd Opera House Cup will be contested Sunday, Aug. 16.
